High School Credits for Edmonton High School Students

Hello students and teachers of the EOTM project!

I'm Derek Wong, a student from Queen Elizabeth High and member of the SLISE group.

The SLISE group is the Student Led Initiative for Sustainable Education at Queen Elizabeth High School. We are currently an extracurricular group which offers high school credits, based off of module work, for students interested in environmentalism and alternative energy. The SLISE group has three, one credit modules, focused on water. Students at Queen Elizabeth are currently completing these modules in conjunction with other EOTM projects.

Although this program is currently only offered at Queen Elizabeth, the SLISE group would like to offer our credit modules to other students from outside of our school. These modules are recognized by Alberta Learning, and once completed will be worth one high school credit. The modules themselves and are simple and easy to understand. A student will have to commit time of appropriately 15-25 hours towards the modules, however many EOTM projects can be counted as hours towards the modules.

The module have assignments which are simple and easy to understand and the final exam of each module is a conversation with our coordinator, Mr. Dublenko. It is a very informal 10-15 minute conversation, most likely via video conference or video chat, to ensure the student has internalized the information and also to gain their views on the subject matter.

Having said this, there is a few issues which may arise. There is administrative trouble with having students registering for credit work under another school. However if any student or even teacher is interested in completing SLISE modules for high school credits in conjunction with EOTM, contact either myself, Derek Wong at [dw13629@gmail.com] or the coordinator of SLISE, Mr. Dublenko at [slise@epsb.ca]. Be sure to include your name, school and grade and we will get back to you as soon as possible.

In addition the SLISE group is bringing Engineers Without Borders for a water filtration workshop. This workshop is scheduled for the last week of May. If any schools or students are interested in joining us in this water project via video conference (H.323) or even Skype. Please contact myself, Derek Wong at [dw13629@gmail.com] or SLISE coordinator, Mr. Dublenko [slise@epsb.ca] for more information or details.
