Description

Students will reflect on the following questions in the context of their experience at the Palisades and their home environments. Some research may be involved. You will complete this assignment as a blog in the "Reflective" subfolder in the Palisades blog folder. You can then link it as a submission for this assignment.


Task

Part A: Environmental Stewardship 1. From what you have seen, how is Jasper National Park managing water, wildlife, and people? 2. What is one way that you and your family manage your ecological footprint in your homes? What program or organization helps you to do this? 3. Go to footprintnetwork.org and calculate your ecological footprint. (You may need to contact your parents for some further information). What is one concept that you have learned from this website? 4. What are some ways that you could reduce your ecological footprint? Why is this important? Why is it important to manage our ecological footprint? Part B: Living with the Environment 1. How much water does the average Edmontonian/Canadian use every day? How does that compare with other countries? What does this make you think about Canadians? What do you think would be the best way to reduce water consumption? 2. Are there some areas within Alberta or Canada where the water is not safe to drink? What is responsible for this?(ex.Industry, sanitation..?) 3. When you were testing the water at the Atco Dam, what kinds of things did it make you think of? Are there some other areas in Alberta/Canada that you might like to test? 4. Based on what you have learned and seen this week, what is one thing you would like to talk to Premier Alison Redford or Prime Minister Stephen Harper about?


Learning Objectives

Part A : Environmental Stewardship General Outcome: identify trends in the consumption and use of resources and issues related to the effects of resource consumption and use on the environment and investigate possible solutions. Part B: Living with the Environment General Outcome: Students develop an understanding of how humans interact with their natural and built environments around the use of water. Students also investigate methods to monitor and measure the quality of water in order to maintain healthy and sustainable environments.
